I had the most wonderful time at The New York Pops 30th Anniversary Gala on Monday, April 29 which celebrated the icons of popular song, composers Jule Styne and Frank Loesser and entertainer Danny Kaye. The calliber of talent performing on stage was unreal! Those included in the evening were Pops Musical Director/Conductor Steven Reineke, host Paula Zahn, and Broadway stars Nick Adams, Laura Benanti, Stephanie J. Block, Liz Callaway, Will Chase, Megan Hilty, Marilyn Maye, Rob McClure, Donna Murphy, Kelli O'Hara, Laura Osnes, Leslie Uggams, Max von Essen, Anthony Warlow, and Besty Wolfe. Everyone was a hit! I don't think there was one number I did not enjoy.
Stephanie J. Block belted it out on "Don't Rain on My Parade," Betsy Wolfe killed it with "The Music That Makes Me Dance," Laura Osnes gorgeously sang "People," Laura Benanti exquisitely performed "Neverland," Leslie Uggams triumphed on "My Own Morning," Megan Hilty scored big with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," Kelli O'Hara beautifully sang "Inchworm" along with the Ronald McDonald House Rockin' The House Band and Chorus and she shined with "Somebody, Somewhere." The kids from Camp Broadway did a fantastic job with their Gypsy medley, Donna Murphy sang a great rendition of "The Ugly Duckling," Nick Adams, Will Chase, and Max von Essen delighted us with "Fugue for Tinhorns," Rob McClure hilariously entertained us with "Once in Love with Amy," Liz Callaway sparkled with "How to Succeed/I Believe in You," Anthony Warlow sang "Rosabella" with much heart, and finally, Marilyn Maye knocked it out of the park with "Joey, Joey, Joey/Luck Be A Lady." Everyone of these performers were in tip-top shape. I soaked them all in!
A real special treat for me was after the concert. Not only did I get to go to The Plaza Hotel for the very first time ever, but I also got to take photos of the stars before they headed into the Gala dinner. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy more of my take on this most memorable evening!
