On Sunday, June 26, 2011 I entered the world of "Zarkana," the brand-new Cirque du Soliel extravaganza at Radio City Music Hall in New York City for the second time. "Zarkana" is a spectacle to feast your eyes on! Keeping with the tradition of Cirque du Soliel, "Zarkana" features a host of unbelievably talented acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, singers, clowns, and death-defying moves that can only be believed by being part of the experience. What makes "Zarkana" different than other Cirque shows is that this show is an acrobatic rock opera that combines circus arts with the surreal.
While the whole company is responsible for making "Zarkana" the visual phenomenon that it is, I would like to highlight some of my favorite performers. Serving as what I consider the "ringmaster" of the night is "Zark," usually played by French-singer Garou, but on Sundays (when I saw the show for this review) is played by Paul Bisson. I will comment on both performers because I think they are remarkable singers and I feel lucky to have had the chance to see both Garou and Paul perform this role and both deserve to be highlighted. Juggler, Maria Choodu, wows the audience with her skill, juggling multiple balls while moving about the stage. The aerialists who perform on the High Wire, Trapeze, Banquine, and Wheel of Death should all be applauded loudly for their amazing talent as they fly through the air, making the death-defying moments, breath-taking! Anatoly Zalevskiy, who's shining moment of Hand Balancing is quite something to see. Sadly on the night I saw "Zarkana" for this review, this part of the show did not happen due to a technical issue, but I still want to comment on it from my first experience of seeing "Zarkana" because Anatoly's part of the show is something to be talked about. While I couldn't imagine this show being mounted without everyone involved, Anatoly's performance really stood out the most for me personally. The control and balance he has is unreal and what he does on stage is like nothing I've seen before.
"Zarkana" is more than a show. It's an event that will leave you wanting more...more of the outstanding talent that encompasses this world! If you are looking for a show to take the whole family to that will make everyone go "Wow," then I highly suggest checking out Cirque du Soliel's "Zarkana" at the world famous Radio City Music Hall in New York City (1260 Avenue of the Americas, between 50th & 51st Street) through October 8.
