Call Redialed: NEW Cady Huffman Interview: "Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music" at The Green Room 42

I LOVE interviewing Tony Award winner Cady Huffman. We always have a great time together, though, the best time we’ve had so far was when Cady, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Kenyon Phillips & I all got together at Daphne’s apartment for an interview three years ago.

Now, Cady, is once again teaming up with director extraordinaire Will Nunziata for Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music, which explores Peggy’s extraordinary journey from her humble beginnings as Norma Deloris Egstrom of Jamestown, North Dakota to becoming one of the biggest stars the music world has ever seen.

Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music will play at The Green Room 42 (570 Tenth Ave, 4th Floor inside YOTEL) on June 10 and June 12 at 7pm. Click here for tickets!

1. This June you are presenting Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music, an evening of music and lyrics composed or co-composed by Peggy Lee. What is it about Peggy Lee that made you want to present an evening of her music? “Fever.” I heard it when I was very young and just couldn’t get enough. Sexy and simple and strong. Later, I heard a radio documentary about her and again, was spellbound.

It may have been the first time I realized that famous people have hard lives too. It’s her power and femininity that has always drawn me in. I always hoped that was me too. Then, Will asked me if I wanted to develop a show and I said, “Of course! I have a poster of her in my living room!"

2. How long did it take you to create this show...from idea to inception? It’s been about a year and a half and we are still working on it! We plan to eventually develop it into a full theater piece.

3. In developing this show, what did you learn about Peggy Lee that you didn't know beforehand? We had the wonderful privilege of meeting her granddaughter, Holly. Holly has beautiful memories of her grandmother. She told me about about Peggy’s spiritual side. Her message was spirituality, love and forgiveness. Also, that her off-stage personality was quite mischievous. I just love how well loved she was on a personal level.

4. What do you relate to most about Peggy Lee? Her tough sweetness. She’d stand up for herself in business but had trouble in her personal life. Her struggles.  Also, her connection with people as well as her desire for connection with people.

5. What should audiences know about this show prior to coming? All the songs are written by Peggy Lee. She wrote the lyrics for every song and wrote both lyrics and music for many. Also, that this isn’t a tribute show. We have a few songs that audiences have never heard.

We are doing our best to bring Peggy to life right now. In 2019. To still tell her story, but also to give her the chance to come back and bring her message to a modern audience. Perhaps she has learned something? Perhaps she has let go of some things? Perhaps, with some hindsight, she expresses herself differently?

6. What was the first song you knew had to be in this show? “Fever".”

7. What song ended up on the chopping block that you wish you could have included? That would be giving too much away ;)

8. If you could have dinner with Peggy Lee what would you have and what burning question would you like to ask her? I’d love to share a bottle of champagne with her and ask her all about Jamestown, North Dakota. I love hearing about people’s childhoods and hers was hard and full of magic. I’d love to hear it from her.

9. One of the songs you are performing in this show is "Fever." What celebrity gives you "Fever"? Idris Elba.

10. You will also be singing "I Don't Know Enough About You." What is something we don't know about Cady Huffman that you'd like reveal to us now? I can keep a secret.
